Minco Announces Expanded Certifications for Hazardous Area Temperature Sensor Assemblies

MINNEAPOLIS  (October 26, 2023)

Minco Products Inc., a global provider of thermal solutions, flex circuits, and temperature sensing and control solutions, recently announced consolidated certifications for hazardous area temperature sensor assemblies.

Minco has recently consolidated their certifications surrounding hazardous areas. Hazardous area certifications have been developed to protect people and equipment from ignition of explosive gases, flammable liquids, and the lesser known combustible dusts (grain elevator explosions being one example). These risks are present in many applications; therefore, electrical equipment including motors, generators and pumps used in hazardous areas are often designed to prevent their becoming a source of ignition via sparking or an unacceptably hot surface temperature. Temperature sensors are one possible ignition source in this equipment which leads to certification requirements on the sensors.

Minco’s certified temperature sensor assemblies combine two previous product lines into a single tri-certified product line. The new AS9 product line is certified to the three most common certification systems: IECEx (world-wide), ATEX (Europe), and North America’s NEC/CSA (USA & Canada). Prior Minco versions had different products certified for these different regions. The tri-certified approach offers advantages for users as fewer inventory parts are required to meet all three requirements. Minco’s AS9 assemblies carry Explosionproof (Class I Div 1), Flameproof (Ex db), Intrinsic Safety (Ex ia), Dust ignition protection (Ex tb), and Dust-ignition proof (Class II,III, Div 1) certifications.

The new temperature sensor assemblies include an IP66 enclosure for electrical connections, with options for RTD or thermocouple sensors for temperatures to 600°C, spring-loaded tip-sensitive probes to monitor bearing temperature, thermowells for pipes or pressure vessels, and 4-20mA transmitters with optional HART® communication.
