    Kapton Thermal Characteristics

    What is the thermal conductivity of Kapton?  I am trying to do some thermal calculations, help!

    The short answer is 0.12 W/m-°K which converts to .833 BTU-in/(ft^2-hr-°F).  This is the manufacturers value.

    I would also point out that there are some good tools on this website under "Engineering Tools", including Thermal Calc, which is a wattage estimating calculator.

    I thought most plastics are about 0.01W/cm-K, which would point to kapton~1.2W/m-K. Is it possible somebody slipped a decimal point? 0.001W/cm-K is close to the thermal conductivity of still air, if I remember right.

    The manufacturer specs for Kapton are good information, but you should be aware that Kapton is not a heater. It is just one material in the stack that makes up a heater. You really need to have the thermal properties of the stack as well as knowledge of the element coverage to calculate thermal transfer.
