Improve Aircraft Instrumentation with Minco Flex Circuits
PROBLEM: An aerospace company needed to make the assembly of their aircraft instrumentation easier as well as reduce weight and improve reliability. These instruments consist of panel-mounted meters that display altitude, temperatures, and other parameters. Inside the cylindrical case of each instrument were three rigid circuit boards. The volume between the folded boards was so jammed with components and connecting wires that the boards were actually bowed outward.
SOLUTION: The solution was to replace the boards and several wires with one rigidized flexible circuit consisting of a two layer flex and three stiffeners. The stiffeners included silk-screened markings to identify components. After the components are mounted, the circuit is folded in the flexible areas between stiffeners, the indicator display is connected to the end of the circuit, and the assembly is inserted into the cylindrical case.
